Permanent daylight time vs. permanent standard time
Almost everyone agrees the clock changes should stop. The disagreement is about where to stop them.
Public debate usually offers two options: keep switching, or adopt permanent daylight saving time. But there are three, and the third one — permanent standard time — is the one most sleep scientists actually recommend. Understanding why is the difference between having an opinion and having an informed one.
The three options
1. Keep changing the clocks (today's law)
Standard time in winter, daylight time from mid-March to early November. You get reasonable winter sunrises and long summer evenings — at the cost of two disruptive transitions a year. The spring transition in particular is associated with a measurable short-term spike in heart attacks, strokes, and traffic accidents.
2. Permanent daylight time (the Sunshine Protection Act)
Clocks never fall back. Winter evenings gain an hour of light; winter mornings lose one. Favored by retail and recreation industries, by people who want usable daylight after work, and by anyone who simply hates the switch. This is what the bill in front of Congress would do.
3. Permanent standard time
Clocks never spring forward. Mornings stay bright year-round; summer evenings get dark an hour earlier than you're used to. This is the option recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and endorsed by a range of sleep and circadian researchers.
Why sleep scientists prefer standard time
The argument rests on morning light. Human circadian rhythms are set primarily by light exposure shortly after waking; morning light advances the body clock and helps you fall asleep at a reasonable hour. Evening light does the opposite — it delays the body clock and pushes sleep later.
Permanent daylight time systematically removes morning light in winter and adds evening light. Researchers argue this produces a chronic mismatch between social schedules and biological ones, sometimes called "social jet lag," with knock-on effects for sleep duration, mood, and metabolic health. Standard time keeps clock time closer to solar time, which is the alignment human physiology evolved with.
Why permanent daylight time is popular anyway
Because most people don't experience their day as a circadian biologist. They experience it as leaving work at 5 PM. Under permanent daylight time, an extra hour of usable evening light means being able to walk, exercise, shop, or watch a kid's practice in daylight during the months when that's currently impossible.
There are real arguments on this side too: more evening daylight is associated with more retail activity and recreation, and some studies find reductions in evening crime and in certain kinds of traffic collisions. And there's the simplest argument of all — the twice-yearly switch is genuinely disliked, and this ends it.
What the trade-off actually is
Strip away the framing and the choice is narrow: you are deciding whether to move an hour of winter daylight from the morning to the evening. That's it. The sun doesn't change; only the label on the clock does. Summer is unaffected either way, because the country is already on daylight time then.
Which side you land on mostly depends on when you're outside and awake. Someone who commutes before dawn and someone who wants light after work are not disagreeing about facts — they're weighing the same trade-off from different schedules.
